Birak Slow TV: Celebrating the Season of the Young in Perth’s Urban Heart

Birak, the first summer and one of the Noongar six seasons, falls approximately between December and January. It is fondly known as the season of the young, a time when the relentless rains give way to burgeoning warm weather, marking the onset of summer’s embrace. This transformative phase in Western Australia’s natural cycle is the focus of three exceptional slow television documentaries, set to adorn the City Urban screen this season.

The documentaries, a vibrant testament to the natural color and hues of Birak, offer viewers a unique window into the inner-city’s natural splendor. Filmed at the picturesque Dyoondalup (Point Walter) and various locations along the scenic Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River), they capture the vivid beauty and teeming life of Perth’s natural wonders. These visual feasts are thoughtfully paired with insightful snippets of information, sourced from the KURONGKURL KATITJIN page of the Edith Cowan University (ECU) website.

As viewers are immersed in the tranquility and beauty of these settings, the documentaries subtly educate and inform, bridging the gap between urban life and natural history. The aim is to not just showcase the season’s beauty but also to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Noongar culture and its intimate connection with nature. Each scene, meticulously captured, is a reminder of the intricate balance and harmony that defines Birak, offering a moment of reflection and connection in the bustling heart of Perth.
