City of Perth Heritage Collection: Northbridge Past

Northbridge has a rich and diverse history. Originally part of a large swamp and lake system inhabited by the Whadjuk Noongar people, the area held cultural and spiritual significance long before European settlement. In the late 1800s, as Perth developed, Northbridge began to transform into a working-class suburb, home to a mix of immigrants, particularly from Greece, Italy, and China. This cultural diversity gave rise to its vibrant community atmosphere. Over time, Northbridge evolved into Perth’s premier cultural and entertainment precinct, known for its eclectic restaurants, lively nightlife, and arts venues.

Photographs of Northbridge’s past reveal over one hundred years of local history, dating back to the 1880s. The materials collected by Heritage Perth include works photographed and donated by local street photographer Greg Woodward.

Northbridge Past screens daily at the City of Perth Northbridge Piazza Superscreen throughout April.
